Discover more about Marjaniemi Lighthouse

Located in the village of Marjaniemi, the Marjaniemi Lighthouse is a striking landmark on Hailuoto Island. Designed by Axel Hampus Dalström, the brick lighthouse was first lit in 1872 and has been a beacon for over 150 years. It stands approximately 25 meters high and contains 110 steps to the top. Marjaniemi has been a harbor and fishing port for hundreds of years. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding seafarers into Oulu, especially with the increase in maritime traffic in the 18th and 19th centuries. Before modern navigation, the lighthouse and pilot station were essential for maritime safety. The pilot station, which now operates as a hotel, is located next to the lighthouse. Visitors can climb the lighthouse tower and enjoy views of the Bothnian Bay. The surrounding area features a fishing village with buildings that once housed lighthouse staff and pilots. Some buildings have been renovated into restaurants and accommodations. The sandy beaches and dunes offer opportunities for leisurely strolls.
