Discover more about Keskiniemi Beacon

The Keskiniemi Beacon, also known as the Karvo Beacon Tower, is a significant historical landmark on the island of Hailuoto in the Gulf of Bothnia. Completed in 1858, this beacon served as a crucial navigational aid, warning seafarers of the extensive sandbanks stretching north of Keskiniemi. Designed by Albin Stjerncreutz, the beacon is the oldest preserved sea mark on Hailuoto, holding immense cultural and historical value. The beacon's architecture is notable for its sturdy wooden construction. It features a six-meter high square base topped with a square pyramidical structure, reaching a total height of 18.9 meters. The tower's white facade ensures high visibility against the horizon, making it easily distinguishable during daylight hours. Inside the base, a thick layer of stones acts as a counterweight, providing stability against strong winds. Although the beacon itself was never lit, a sector light was erected alongside it in 1908 to further aid navigation. Reaching the Keskiniemi Beacon involves a scenic journey to the northwestern part of Hailuoto. Visitors can drive to the end of Karvontie and then follow a roughly two-kilometer hiking trail to the beacon. The trail offers an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Hailuoto, but be prepared for potentially wet conditions, especially in the spring. Despite its remote location, the Keskiniemi Beacon remains a popular destination for those seeking to connect with the island's maritime heritage and enjoy its tranquil coastal landscapes.
