Discover more about Pilpasuo

Pilpasuo, a protected mire area in eastern Oulu, presents a unique opportunity to explore a northern bog landscape. This expansive area, characterized by its largely unditched marshland, is a nationally recognized peatland conservation area and a part of the Natura 2000 network. Pilpasuo's origins trace back to an ancient coastal meadow formed roughly 3,000 years ago, with the Ala-Korkiakangas raised beach marking a former island from 6,500 years ago.Visitors can explore Pilpasuo via two main duckboarded nature trails. The Lystireitti Route, a shorter 1 km loop around Pahalampi Pond, is ideal for families with young children, featuring engaging tasks and a lean-to shelter. The longer Aistireitti Route stretches 7 km and includes eight task points, inviting hikers to fully engage their senses. Both trails showcase the area's diverse plant life, including bog rosemary, bogbean, and leatherleaf, alongside various bird species.Throughout the year, Pilpasuo offers varied experiences. Summer brings opportunities for hiking and enjoying campfires, while autumn is ideal for berry and mushroom picking. In winter, the preserve transforms into a landscape suited for snowshoeing and viewing the Northern Lights. Visitors should note that while firewood is sometimes available, bringing your own is recommended, and camping is only permitted at the lean-to shelters.
