Discover more about Suomenlinna Church

The Suomenlinna Church, located on the island of Iso Mustasaari within the Suomenlinna sea fortress, boasts a rich history and unique dual function. Constructed in 1854 as an Eastern Orthodox garrison church for the Russian troops stationed at Suomenlinna, it was dedicated to Alexander Nevsky. The church was designed by Konstantin Thon, a Russian architect known for his work on significant buildings like the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Originally, the church featured five onion domes and served the spiritual needs of the Russian military personnel. Following Finland's independence in 1917, the church was converted into an Evangelical Lutheran church as a symbol of the nation's newfound sovereignty. The four smaller onion domes were removed, and the interior was renovated in a more Western style. In 1929, the church was reconsecrated after renovations designed by architect Einar Sjöström. The central dome was ingeniously redesigned to serve as a lighthouse, making it one of the few churches in the world with this dual purpose. The lighthouse still functions today, guiding both sea and air traffic with a light signal that represents the letter 'H' in Morse code, signifying Helsinki. The church's exterior is surrounded by a fence constructed from cannons and chains, dating back to the 1870s. Inside, the church features a Lutheran altar and simple, unadorned decor. The church bell, which is the largest in Finland, was cast in Moscow in 1885 and is displayed near the church. Today, the Suomenlinna Church belongs to the parish of the Helsinki Cathedral and hosts services on the first Sunday of each month. Visitors can explore the church and learn about its fascinating history, as well as enjoy the surrounding Suomenlinna fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
