From the parking lot, the trailhead is easily visible, marked by an information board detailing the hike. The recommended route follows an anti-clockwise loop. The trail is well-marked with green and orange signs and red reflectors. No special equipment is needed unless there has been a recent heavy snowfall, in which case snowshoes are recommended.

    From Kuusamo Airport or Kuusamo city center, take a bus towards Ruka. Get off at Ruka Kumpare. From there, you can take another bus or a taxi to the Saarua parking area, the starting point of the Valtavaara Winter Trail, or walk approximately 5km. The Valtavaara Winter Trail is a popular hiking destination located in the Valtavaara-Pyhävaara Nature Reserve near Ruka, Finland. The 5.5 km trail is open during the winter season and offers hikers an opportunity to explore a pristine snowy landscape. The trail winds through forests of snow-covered fir trees, leading to the summit of Valtavaara, the highest hill in the Kuusamo region, reaching 491 meters. The Valtavaara Winter Trail is classified as demanding due to a few steep climbs and descents. The estimated hiking time is about three hours. The route is well marked with green and orange signs, and red reflectors, so there is little risk of getting lost. Along the trail, there are several huts where hikers can rest. Near the summit is the Valtavaara campfire hut with a campfire site and dry toilet, as well as the Valtavaara day-trip hut, a tiny hut with a stove and small table set. On the way down, there is a cooking shelter and, near the starting point, the Saaruan Taukotupa hut with toilets and a barbeque place. From the top of Valtavaara, hikers can enjoy views of the surrounding landscape, including the Ruka Ski Resort and, in clear weather, views extending into Russia. The trail is popular, so it is usually easy to walk, but snowshoes may be needed after a heavy snowfall.
