History of Oulanka National Park

A River-Shaped Landscape

Oulanka's character was formed by long geological processes and the later work of its rivers. Flowing water has cut valleys and gorges through the bedrock, while rapids, terraces and limestone-influenced soils have created a mixture of habitats unusual in northern Finland. The Oulanka and Kitka river systems remain the central physical features of the park, linking its forests, meadows and canyon landscapes. Geological explanations belong to a timescale far older than human settlement, but they help explain why a relatively compact area contains such varied vegetation and terrain.

Traditional Land Use

The Oulanka region has long been used by people moving through the forests and river valleys. Sámi communities have historical connections with the wider northern region, while later Finnish settlement brought farming, haymaking, fishing, hunting and the seasonal use of forest resources. Reindeer herding remains part of the cultural landscape around Kuusamo and Salla.
