Getting there

Walking

Oulu Castle is easily accessible on foot from Oulu city center. From the Oulu Market Square, head southeast on Kauppatori towards Torikatu. Continue straight for about 500 meters until you reach the intersection with Kirkkokatu. Turn left onto Kirkkokatu and walk until you reach the park area. The castle is located on Linnansaari, a small island accessible by foot from the park. There is no fee to access the Oulu Castle ruins.

Public Transport

From Oulu Market Square, take bus line 14 or 15 towards 'Linnanmaa'. Get off at the 'Linnanpuisto' stop. Walk towards Linnansaari Park, and you will find Oulu Castle at the end of the park. A single ticket is valid for 90 minutes and can be purchased via the OSL app, R-Kioski vendors, or with cash on the bus. Contactless payment is also available on buses. A single ticket costs between €2-€3.

Car

If driving, follow signs for 'Keskusta' (City Center) and then towards the waterfront area. Look for signs for Oulu Castle (Linnansaari 1). Limited parking is available near the castle. Enter by car only when driving from the Northern direction via Merikoskenkatu. When driving from the Southern direction, it is not possible to turn to the cellar parking lot. Free parking spaces are available on Raatti Island, next to Linnansaari. Parking in the city center is subject to a charge on weekdays 8:00-18:00 and Saturdays 8:00-16:00.

Oulu Castle, or what remains of it, stands on Linnansaari island as a reminder of Oulu's strategic past. Originally built in 1590, the castle served as a late defense structure for Swedish soldiers. Constructed primarily of wood and earth, it has witnessed numerous conflicts and disasters.Over the centuries, Oulu Castle faced several setbacks, including destruction by the Russian army in 1715 during the Great Northern War and a lightning strike in 1793 that ignited the gunpowder magazine. Today, the ruins offer a glimpse into the past, with informative signs detailing the castle's history.The site features a charming café located in the old powder magazine, dating back to 1875 when it served as an observatory for the Oulu School of Sea Captains. Visitors can enjoy coffee, tea, and ice cream while taking in the picturesque surroundings. The castle grounds also provide a pleasant space for leisurely walks and picnics, with scenic views of the Oulu River.
