Discover more about Rotuaarin pallo

The Rotuaarin Pallo, also known as the 'Ball of Rotuaari,' is more than just a fountain; it's a central landmark and a social hub in Oulu. Officially named Keskusaukion kaivohuone (Central Square Well House), this impressive sculpture was designed by Seppo Valjus and inaugurated in 1989. The name 'Rotuaari' itself is derived from the French word 'trottoir,' meaning sidewalk, reflecting the area's pedestrian-friendly nature. Located in the heart of the Rotuaari pedestrian zone, at Kirkkokatu 17, the sculpture marks the center of Oulu's vibrant city life. The Rotuaari area was established in 1987 when part of Kirkkokatu was converted into a pedestrian street. Over time, it expanded to include Kauppurienkatu and Isokatu, becoming a lively hub for shops, cafes, and cultural events. In 2020, Rotuaari was further extended towards Heinäpää, with the pedestrianization of Albertinkatu. The Rotuaarin Pallo is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a place to relax, meet friends, and enjoy the atmosphere of Oulu. The surrounding Rotuaari area hosts various events throughout the year, including the Rotuaari Piknik festival, which brings in performers from Scandinavia and beyond. The area is designed to be enjoyed year-round, with a heating system installed under the pavement to keep it free of ice and snow during the winter months.
