Tuira Park: A Blend of History and Nature

Tuira Park, located in the Tuira district of Oulu, is a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Situated north of the city center across the Oulujoki River, Tuira Park has evolved from its past as the location of three hospital complexes in the early 1900s, including maternity, municipal, and nervous disorder hospitals. Today, the park offers visitors a tranquil environment with diverse vegetation and protected buildings that create a beautifully preserved cultural landscape. The park's design emphasizes accessibility, featuring wooden walkways that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings. A highlight is the rosebay park in the northern section, where an accessible wooden elevation allows people to stroll among the rosebay flowers. The park is also known for its bat population, which can be observed during summer evenings. Tuira itself has a rich history, with population growth accelerating after the construction of the first bridges connecting it to Oulu in 1869. The area was annexed by the city in 1886. While much of Tuira's original wooden townhouses were replaced by residential tower blocks in the 1970s, Tuira Park retains a sense of the area's past. The park provides a green space for recreation and relaxation, appealing to both locals and tourists.
