Discover more about Pyynikki Coffee Shop & Observation Tower

Located in Tampere, Finland, the Pyynikki Observation Tower is a 26-meter-tall structure built from local red granite. Completed in 1929 to celebrate Tampere's 150th anniversary, the tower stands 75 meters above Lake Pyhäjärvi, offering stunning views from the crest of the Pyynikki Esker. Before the current tower, a wooden observation tower existed from 1888 but was damaged during the Battle of Tampere in 1918. The new tower, designed by city architect Vilho Kolho, quickly became a popular attraction. While the Näsinneula tower eventually surpassed it in popularity among foreign tourists, Pyynikki remains a favorite among locals and Finnish visitors. Visitors can ascend the tower via stairs or an elevator. The open top provides clear views of Tampere, Lake Näsijärvi to the north, and Lake Pyhäjärvi to the south. The base houses a cafeteria famous for its traditional Finnish doughnuts ('munkki'), prepared using a recipe unchanged for over 80 years. The surrounding Pyynikki Esker was designated a nationally valuable landscape attraction in 1993. Today, the Pyynikki Observation Tower is recognized as a cultural environment of national significance by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities.
