Cathédrale Saint-Pierre stands as a testament to Annecy's rich religious and architectural history. Originally constructed in the early 16th century (1535-1538) under the direction of Jacques Rossel as a chapel for a Franciscan priory, it quickly became a central point for the Catholic community. This transition occurred when Geneva embraced the Protestant Reformation, leading the Catholic clergy to seek refuge in Annecy, and the church became their provisional cathedral. The cathedral's architectural style is a captivating blend of Gothic and Renaissance influences. The main structure embodies a classic Gothic design, evident in its pointed arches and ribbed vaults. However, the façade, added later, showcases a softer, more Italian Renaissance style, featuring pilasters and a triangular pediment. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with 19th-century altars and a notable organ built in 1842, which is classified as a historical monument.During the French Revolution, the building was repurposed as a Temple of Reason. It wasn't until 1822 that it officially became the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, the seat of the Diocese of Annecy. Today, the cathedral is a national monument, inviting visitors to explore its historical and artistic treasures.
