Discover more about Jardins de l'Europe

The Jardins de l'Europe, a beloved natural park in Annecy, offers visitors a serene and picturesque experience. Situated between the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and the stunning Lake Annecy, this green space provides a shady and pleasant retreat for leisurely walks. Originally, the area was a marshy island outside the city walls. In the Middle Ages, it served as a refuge for those suffering from contagious diseases. Over time, the island transformed, becoming the property of the Asinari family, Lombard bankers, in the 14th and 15th centuries. Later, it was gifted to the Order of the Visitation, who used it as a walled garden connected to their convent. In 1863, the council decided to create an English-style garden. Landscape architect Henri Porreaux designed the gardens, and by January 1864, over 650 trees and 1,000 shrubs had been planted. Today, the gardens boast approximately 250 trees, including ginkgo bilobas, Virginia tulip trees, laricio pines, and giant sequoias. As you stroll through the Jardins de l'Europe, you'll encounter the Monument Berthollet, a bronze statue honoring the chemist Claude Louis Berthollet. There is also a plaque commemorating Napoleon III's gift of a steamboat to Annecy in 1860, when Savoy became part of France. The park also features modern sculptures. At the end of the park is the Île des Cygnes (Swan Island), a small, tree-covered island that provides a habitat for numerous birds. The Pont des Amours (Bridge of Love) connects the gardens to the Pâquier, offering stunning views and a romantic ambiance.
