Discover more about A Saint François de Sales

Église Saint-François de Sales stands as a testament to Annecy's rich history and architectural beauty. This Savoyard Baroque church, established in 1612, captivates visitors with its elegant façade and intricately designed interiors. Originally built to serve the Visitation convent, founded by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, the church has become a focal point for both the local community and visitors from around the world. The church's roots trace back to the early 17th century when Saint Francis de Sales, a prominent religious figure, commissioned its construction. The building was inspired by the church of the Gesù in Rome, with a facade that is divided into two levels, above which is a triangular pediment. Inside, you'll find beautiful altarpieces dating from the seventeenth century. The interior is richly decorated, as many crowned heads came on pilgrimage to Annecy to honour the graves of Saint Francis and Saint Sales and Jeanne de Chantal. Throughout its history, the church has undergone various transformations, including periods as a military barracks and a factory during the French Revolution. The relics of the two saints were transferred to the Basilica of the Visitation. In 1923, it was returned to its religious use and acquired by the town of Annecy in 1968. Today, Église Saint-François de Sales remains a significant historical landmark, classified as a historical monument since 1952. It also serves as a gathering place for the Italian community of Annecy, reflecting its long-standing cultural significance.
