Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard: A Fairytale Fortress

Originally a simple wooden guard post in the 10th century, the castle evolved into a fortified house between the 12th and 19th centuries. Over the centuries, it transformed from a medieval fortress into a stately residence.During the Renaissance, the castle was modified, and a facade was built overlooking the lake. In the 19th century, under René de Menthon, the castle's architecture became more romantic, drawing inspiration from the castles of Louis II of Bavaria. The castle's unique architecture and breathtaking views have led some to believe that Walt Disney drew inspiration from it for the castle in Sleeping Beauty.A visit to the Château de Menthon offers a glimpse into the history of a family and a region. The castle contains a rich variety of furniture and period decorations. Visitors can explore the exceptional furnishings, half-timbered galleries, and a kitchen with a traditional serving hatch. The owner's bedroom features walls adorned with tapestries, and the library houses around 12,000 books. The castle also has a permaculture vegetable garden and biodynamic vines.The castle is open to the public from April to November, with varying hours depending on the season. Guided tours, which last approximately 45 minutes, are available.
