Discover more about Château de Vayres

Château de Vayres, a majestic fortress gracefully positioned along the Dordogne River, stands as a testament to centuries of French history and architectural evolution. Located in the commune of Vayres, a short distance from Bordeaux, this classified historical monument offers visitors a captivating journey through time, showcasing a seamless blend of medieval strength, Renaissance elegance, and 17th-century refinement. The château's origins trace back to the 11th century when it was constructed to safeguard the city of Bordeaux. Its strategic location along the Dordogne River made it a crucial defensive point. Over the centuries, Château de Vayres has witnessed numerous power struggles and transformations, each leaving its mark on the structure and its surrounding landscape. The oldest part of the castle still standing is the Tour du Moulin, dating back to the 13th century. In 1288, the château came under the control of the d'Albret family through the marriage of Rose de Bourg to Amanieu VII d'Albret. The d'Albret family held the château for 300 years. During the Hundred Years' War, the castle was expanded with financial support from King Edward II of England. The donjon, entry gate, and now-dry moats date from this period. King Henri IV, inherited the château from his mother, Jeanne d'Albret. However, facing financial difficulties, he sold it in 1583 to Ogier de Gourgue, a wealthy and influential figure in Bordeaux. De Gourgue initiated significant renovations, transforming the fortress into a more elegant Renaissance residence. He commissioned Louis de Foix, the architect behind the Cordouan lighthouse, to design the château's elegant facade. Further embellishments were carried out in the 17th century, including the construction of a monumental double-revolution staircase over the moats. The Gourgue family retained ownership of the château until 1900. In 2001, Château de Vayres was officially recognized as a historical monument of France. Today, Château de Vayres welcomes visitors to explore its rich history and architectural splendor. Guided tours, available, provide insights into the château's past and the lives of its inhabitants. The interior features an exceptional collection of tapestries, period furniture, and meticulously restored rooms, offering a glimpse into the lives of French nobility.
