Discover more about Fontaine du Parlement

The Fontaine du Parlement, situated in Bordeaux's Place du Parlement, is a notable example of neoclassical artistry. Erected in 1865, the fountain was commissioned by then-mayor Guillaume-Henri Brochon and designed by local architect Louis-Michel Garros, with sculptures by Edmond Prévot. Garros also designed other fountains in Bordeaux, including those at Place Nansouty and Place Charles Gruet. The fountain's design features a pedestal adorned with volutes, supporting a vasque from which emerge sculpted female heads. Water flows from mascarons, decorative face-like sculptures, adding to the fountain's visual appeal. The fountain's base is constructed from large, gilded stone slabs. The Place du Parlement, originally named Place du Marché Royal in 1760, was intended as an extension of the Grand-Marché. It was later renamed Place de la Liberté during the French Revolution before receiving its current name in 1848, honoring the Parliament of Bordeaux (1462-1790). Today, the square is a popular spot surrounded by restaurants and shops, close to the quays, Place de la Bourse, and Rue Sainte-Catherine.
