Discover more about Notre-Dame de France

Notre-Dame de France, a colossal statue of the Virgin Mary, dominates the skyline of Le Puy-en-Velay from its perch atop the Rocher Corneille. This impressive monument is more than just a religious icon; it's a testament to 19th-century engineering and French history. The statue's origins trace back to 1850 when the Bishop of Le Puy, Joseph de Morlhon, envisioned a grand statue dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A competition was held, and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux's design was selected. Construction began in 1856 and was completed in 1860. A unique aspect of the statue is its construction material: 213 cannons captured from the Russians during the Crimean War were donated by Emperor Napoleon III and melted down to create the statue. Notre-Dame de France stands 22.7 meters (74 feet) tall and weighs 835 tons. When it was inaugurated on September 12, 1860, it was the tallest statue in the world, though it was later surpassed by the Statue of Liberty in New York in 1886. The statue was renovated in 2013. Visitors can climb to the top of the Rocher Corneille and explore the statue. The ascent is an easy walk with interpretation panels, rest areas, a fountain, and souvenir shops. From the top, visitors are rewarded with exceptional panoramic views of Le Puy-en-Velay, including the cathedral and the surrounding region. The statue is open daily from 9 am to 7:30 pm between July and August. From October 2025 to June 2027, the statue will be closed for planned works. Le Puy-en-Velay is a Marian city and a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
