Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine: A Romanesque Masterpiece

The Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine in Issoire stands as a testament to the grandeur of Romanesque art in the Auvergne region. Constructed in the 12th century, around 1130, this abbey church is dedicated to Saint Austremoine, the first bishop of Clermont and evangelizer of Auvergne in the late 3rd century. The church is built on the site of an earlier chapel that was raised over the tomb of St. Austremoine.As one of the five major Romanesque churches in Auvergne, the Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine is renowned for its imposing size and elaborate decoration. The exterior showcases the characteristic tiered volumes of Auvergnat Romanesque architecture, with a stunning apse adorned with geometric patterns, mosaics, and sculpted medallions representing the signs of the zodiac. The church is constructed from arkose, a blond sandstone that gives the building a warm color.The interior is equally captivating, featuring a surprising polychromy and magnificent historiated capitals depicting scenes from the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. The vibrant colors, restored in the 19th century, may be controversial but likely reflect the original appearance.
