Over the years, it was renamed Comedy Square before finally receiving its current name in 1843, honoring Louis des Balbes de Berton de Crillon, a distinguished 16th-century captain who died in Avignon in 1615.Historically, the square was home to a statue of Saint Bénézet until 1766. The Hôtel d'Europe, constructed over several centuries, stands on the north side of the square and once hosted Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799. Opposite the Hôtel d'Europe once stood the Royal Palace Hotel, a favored stop for travelers; Marshal Brune was assassinated there in 1815.Today, Place Crillon offers a relaxed atmosphere with historic buildings and a fountain.
