Discover more about Place de l'Horloge

Place de l'Horloge, or Clock Square, is the vibrant heart of Avignon, France, serving as the city's focal point for centuries. Its history stretches back to Roman times when it was the site of the city's forum. Throughout the Middle Ages, the square, then known as Place du Grand-Marché, was the city's main marketplace. The square's current layout was designed in 1743 by Jean-Baptiste Franque. Today, Place de l'Horloge is bordered by numerous restaurants and cafes, their terraces shaded by large plane trees. On the opposite side stand the facades of the City Hall and the Opera House, both built in the 19th century. The City Hall incorporates the old belfry, a remnant of the Cardinal's livery of Albano, which was destroyed in 1844. The clock tower is adorned with Jacquemart and Jacotte, who have been ringing the bell since the 15th century. Place de l'Horloge remains a central gathering place and a hub of entertainment, especially during the Festival d'Avignon in July. During the festival, the square comes alive with street performers and theater companies, attracting large crowds.
