Discover more about Église Saint-Louis des Chartrons

Located in the heart of the Chartrons district, the Église Saint-Louis des Chartrons is a remarkable example of Neo-Gothic architecture. Constructed between 1874 and 1880, the church was designed by Bordeaux architect Pierre-Charles Brun. The church stands on the site of a former Carmelite convent, its design reflecting the classic Neo-Gothic style of the late 19th century. The exterior is distinguished by two prominent towers with slender stone spires that frame the main facade. The facade includes a porch with three arches, each topped with gables featuring rose windows. Inside, the church features a traditional Latin cross plan, with a nave flanked by two aisles, a transept, and a choir ending in a pentagonal apse. The interior is richly decorated, featuring ribbed vaults, an elevated triforium, and tall windows. The stained glass windows, crafted by masters Henri Fleur and Nicolas Lorin, illuminate the nave and choir with vibrant colors. The church also houses a magnificent sacristy made of 18th-century mahogany. Notably, the Église Saint-Louis des Chartrons is home to the most significant symphonic organ in the Aquitaine region, created by Georges Wenner in 1880 and 1881. The organ's stunning Neo-Gothic case, crafted from oak, was designed by P. Thureau. The church is an active venue for Catholic religious services and occasionally hosts cultural events, concerts, and art exhibitions.
