Discover more about Halle des Chartrons

Halle des Chartrons seamlessly blends Bordeaux's rich history with its vibrant cultural scene. Situated in the Chartrons district, this architectural gem was originally built in 1869 as a market hall by architect Charles Burguet. The revolutionary authorities decided to build a market in the Chartrons district on the site of the former Carmelite monastery in 1792. The work was entrusted to Michel Bonfin who designed a square with a rectangular shape. Burguet chose to preserve the octagonal building and enclosed it in a gallery with a glass roof that was mostly open to the outside, and supported by small Corinthian columns. The hall's distinctive 19th-century architecture, characterized by soaring arches and expansive windows, provides a unique backdrop for events. Though initially intended as a neighborhood market, its structure proved impractical for traders. In 1998, the hall was restored and transformed into a cultural venue for the City of Bordeaux. Today, it serves as a dynamic space hosting exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and festivals. The Halle des Chartrons is surrounded by numerous restaurants and is a focal point for both locals and tourists.
