Discover more about Fontaine de la place Saint Projet

The Fontaine de la place Saint Projet, situated on the Place Saint-Projet, is a historic fountain in Bordeaux, France. The square, named after a 7th-century Auvergnat bishop, Saint Projet, was once the site of a church and cemetery. Today, it serves as a vibrant hub connecting the pedestrian streets of Rue Sainte-Catherine and Rue des Trois Conils. The fountain itself was sculpted in 1737 by Michiel van der Voort, a sculptor from the Southern Netherlands. It is built into the wall on the south side of the square. The fountain dispenses potable water from three timed taps. Above, it features symbols of Bordeaux, including three interwoven crescents (the city's logo), flowers, fruits, and scallop shells. Statues of a man and woman represent the Peugue and Devèze rivers, which converge to form the city of Bordeaux. Maritime trophies, such as a ship's prow, rudder, trident, harpoons, and a cornucopia, are displayed beneath the cartouche. Place Saint-Projet is a lively area where street musicians and artists showcase their talents. The square provides a refreshing atmosphere, inviting visitors to pause and appreciate its charm. While visiting the fountain, take note of the architectural remnants of the former church, including a bell tower integrated into the surrounding buildings and a 14th-century cross from the old cemetery.
