Discover more about Église du Vieux Saint Sauveur

The Église du Vieux Saint-Sauveur stands as a testament to Caen's rich history. Likely founded in the Carolingian era, the oldest sections date back to the late 11th or early 12th century. The church is also known as Saint-Sauveur-du-Marché, taking its name from the square on which it resides. Throughout the centuries, the church has undergone numerous transformations. Remodeled in the 14th and 15th centuries, it received a new Flamboyant Gothic-style choir between 1530 and 1546. The entrance facade, integrated with surrounding buildings, reflects 18th-century design. During the French Revolution, the church was repurposed as a market hall for grain, butter and eggs. In the 19th century, the church even served as an exhibition space for the skeleton of a whale. Severely damaged during World War II, the church has since been restored and now hosts artistic and gastronomical events. The church features a Latin cross plan, with a nave, transept, and a tower. Inside, visitors can admire stained glass windows designed by Max Ingrand.
