Discover more about Château de Cheverny

Château de Cheverny, nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley, is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends architectural elegance, historical significance, and a touch of whimsy. Unlike some of the more imposing châteaux in the region, Cheverny exudes a warm, inviting atmosphere, making it a must-see for travelers seeking an authentic glimpse into French aristocratic life. The château has been owned by the same family for over six centuries, and their dedication to preserving its heritage is evident in every meticulously maintained room and garden. The château's history dates back to the 14th century, though the current structure was built between 1624 and 1630, replacing an earlier fortress. Henri Hurault, the son of King Henri II, and his wife Marguerite Gaillard de La Morinière, commissioned the construction, entrusting the project to architect Jacques Bougier. Bougier's design reflects the classical style popular during the reign of Louis XIII, characterized by symmetry, balance, and the use of refined materials. The château's façade is constructed from Bourré stone, a local limestone that hardens and whitens with age, giving it a luminous appearance. Inside, Château de Cheverny is renowned for being the most lavishly furnished château in the Loire Valley. Seventeen rooms are open to the public, each showcasing exquisite furniture, tapestries, and artwork collected by the Hurault family over generations. Highlights include the Gobelins tapestries in the arms room, the Louis XIV commode in the tapestry salon, and the King's bedroom, adorned with intricate details and luxurious fabrics. The dining room features 34 wooden panels illustrating scenes from Don Quixote. Beyond its architectural and artistic merits, Château de Cheverny holds a special place in popular culture as the inspiration for Marlinspike Hall, the home of Captain Haddock in Hergé's beloved Tintin comic books. A permanent exhibition, "The Secrets of Marlinspike," allows visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Tintin, exploring life-sized recreations of iconic scenes from the comics. This interactive exhibit adds a playful dimension to the château experience, appealing to both children and adults. The grounds of Château de Cheverny are as captivating as the château itself. Six distinct gardens offer a variety of landscapes and experiences. The Jardin des Apprentis, a formal French garden, showcases symmetrical designs, clipped hedges, and topiaries. The Jardin Potager Bouquetier combines vegetables and flowers in a harmonious display of color and texture. The Jardin de l'Amour features six sculptures by Gudmar Olovson, celebrating love and family. A Tulip garden displays a ribbon of 250,000 tulips in spring. The grounds also include a maze and a newly created Jardin Sucré, a French-style orchard. Cheverny maintains a pack of around 100 French Poitevin and English Foxhound crossbreed dogs for hunting. Visitors can witness the spectacle of the daily feeding of the hounds (check times). The kennels themselves are an impressive sight, reflecting the château's long-standing tradition of hunting with hounds. Open 365 days a year, Château de Cheverny welcomes visitors to explore its rich history, admire its exquisite interiors, and wander through its enchanting gardens. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, an art lover, a Tintin fan, or simply seeking a beautiful escape, Château de Cheverny offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Loire Valley. The estate extends over 100 hectares, offering diverse visit options based on individual preferences and available time. Visitors can choose a tour that suits them and take a break at the Orangerie du château for lunch or to enjoy artisan ice cream. Since 1994, the park has been open to the public, and the gardens have gradually emerged, starting with the vegetable garden, followed by the apprentice garden in 2006, the labyrinth in 2009, the tulip ribbon in 2014, the love garden in 2019, and the sweet garden in 2020.
