Château Gaillard, nestled in the heart of Amboise, is a royal estate that marks the beginning of the French Renaissance. King Charles VIII, captivated by the artistry he witnessed in Italy, sought to recreate a piece of that paradise in France. Upon his return in 1496, he commissioned the transformation of Château Gaillard, establishing the first French Renaissance gardens.The gardens were designed by Dom Pacello da Mercogliano, a renowned Neapolitan gardener, who brought with him a team of 22 Italian artisans. Together, they created a stunning landscape featuring innovative garden design and the first French orangerie, where orange trees were acclimatized. The estate became a royal resort, favored by Kings Charles VIII, Louis XII, and Francis I. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, even spent her honeymoon here in 1558.Today, visitors can explore the 15-hectare grounds, including the restored 16th-century château, the remarkable Jardins du Roy, and the Orangerie with its diverse citrus collection. The estate also features a fascinating cabinet of curiosities and a salon of frescoes. Château Gaillard offers a unique perspective on the artistic and horticultural innovations of the Renaissance, making it a must-see destination in the Loire Valley.
