Getting There
-
Driving
From Les Houches, follow the signs for 'Le Coupeau' and then 'Parc de Merlet'. The road is a winding 6km mountain road. Be aware that parking is spread across several lots (P1-P4) at varying distances (300m-1500m) from the entrance, with P1 being closest. Parking is free, but lots can fill up quickly in peak season. In July and August, a free shuttle operates from Les Houches train station to alleviate parking congestion. Two disabled parking spaces are available at the top of P1. Note that the last two bends to the drop-off zone are too narrow for minibuses.
-
Public Transport
During July and August, a free shuttle bus operates from Les Houches train station (SNCF) to Parc de Merlet. Check the Parc de Merlet website or the Les Houches Tourist Office for the shuttle timetable. Outside of July and August, the closest bus stop is 'Le Tourchet / Les Houches train station bus stop', served by the Les Houches shuttle, but it's a considerable 1.5-hour hike to the park from there. Bus and train travel is free between Servoz and Vallorcine for those with a 'Carte d'Hote', a valid lift pass, 'Carte Resident Secondaire' or 'Carte Gens de Pay'. Otherwise, a single bus fare is approximately €2.
-
Taxi/Ride-Share
A taxi or ride-share from Les Houches to Parc de Merlet is a convenient option. Expect to pay around €19-€23 for a taxi from Chamonix to Les Houches, but prices may vary. From the taxi drop-off point, there is still a short walk to the park entrance, with some uphill sections. Consider pre-booking a taxi, especially during peak season, to ensure availability.
-
Walking
For experienced hikers, a rewarding but challenging option is to walk from Les Houches or the Balcon Sud. Follow the marked trails, keeping an eye out for signs with a code. Memorizing this code and reciting it at the park entrance will grant you a discount on your ticket. Be prepared for a steep ascent with a vertical gain of approximately 500 meters. Allow at least 1.5 hours for the hike. Note that this option is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
