Platz der alten Synagoge, or Square of the Old Synagogue, is located in the heart of Freiburg im Breisgau. The destruction marked a devastating loss for the Jewish community and a dark chapter in Freiburg's history.After the war, the site remained a vacant reminder of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. For many years, the area was used as a parking lot. In 1987, a memorial was erected, but discussions about a more meaningful commemoration continued. Finally, in 2017, the square was redesigned to create a space that honored the past while fostering community engagement.The modern Platz der alten Synagoge features a shallow pool of water that traces the outline of the former synagogue.
