The Calanques de Piana, also known as Calanche di Piana in Corsican, are a natural wonder located on the west coast of Corsica, France, nestled between Ajaccio and Calvi in the Gulf of Porto. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized since 1983, is characterized by its arresting chaos of pink porphyry rock formations sculpted over millennia by erosion. The bizarre granitic shapes come alive in innumerable mesmerizing forms, especially when lit by the setting sun.These towering red cliffs, reaching heights of 400 meters, dramatically descend into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. The area extends from the tip of Capo Rosso to Ficajola beach. The unique geological formations are a result of ancient volcanic activity, with the red color coming from the porphyry rock. Over time, wind and water have carved the rock into shapes that resemble plants, animals, and petrified people, inspiring local legends. One such legend tells of the devil falling in love with a shepherdess from Piana and, in a fit of rage, petrifying her and her lover, their eternal embrace forming the heart-shaped rock in the calanques.The Calanques are home to diverse flora and fauna, with over 450 species of algae and 125 species of invertebrates in the Gulf of Porto. Royal eagles, peregrine falcons, and ospreys soar above the waters, while moray eels, dentis, dolphins, and groupers inhabit the depths. Visitors can explore the calanques by car via the D81 road, by boat, or on foot via numerous hiking trails. Boat tours often include visits to sea caves and natural swimming pools inaccessible by road. Hiking trails range from easy walks to challenging climbs, offering stunning views of the calanques and the Gulf of Porto.

Driving
The most common way to approach the Calanques de Piana is by car via the D81 road, which connects Piana to Porto. This scenic route winds through the calanques, offering stunning views. Be aware that the road is narrow and can be very busy during the high season. Parking is limited, with some options including the municipal stadium of Piana, Tête de Chien, and along the road. Parking is free at Arone beach. Driving from Ajaccio to Piana takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Piana to Porto, the bus costs €3–5. Note: Due to the narrow roads and limited parking, it's advisable to arrive early or during the off-season.
Public Transport
You can reach the Calanques de Piana by bus from Ajaccio via the Ajaccio-Porto-Ota line. The bus from Ajaccio to Piana takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes, with tickets costing €11-€17. From Piana, you can take another bus to Porto, which takes about 20 minutes and costs €3-€5. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Nice to Ajaccio, which takes approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes and costs €50–120. From Ajaccio, take the bus to Piana as described above. Note: Bus services may be limited, especially during the off-season, so check the schedules in advance.
