Discover more about Monument Sadi Carnot

The Monument Sadi Carnot stands as a striking allegorical memorial in Dijon's Place de la République. It honors Marie François Sadi Carnot (1837-1894), a prominent figure who served as a general councillor, deputy of Côte-d'Or, minister, and the 5th President of the French Republic. Carnot's life was tragically cut short by an assassin in 1894, leading to the creation of this monument as a tribute to his contributions. The monument, inaugurated in 1899, is the work of sculptors Mathurin Moreau and Paul Gasq, based on the designs of architect Félix Vionnois. The centerpiece is a marble statue of Sadi Carnot in an orator's pose, sculpted by Mathurin Moreau. Above him, a bronze allegorical statue of Fame, sculpted by Paul Gasq, holds a laurel wreath. Two additional allegorical statues surround Carnot: Moreau's depiction of History, a bare-breasted woman inscribing Carnot's name, and Gasq's representation of Grief, a veiled woman. The monument serves not only as a historical landmark but also as a place for reflection and appreciation of art and history. The surrounding Place de la République, with its gardens and vibrant atmosphere, enhances the visitor experience.
