Discover more about Beauregard Fort

Fort Beauregard, also known as Fort Beauregard, is a historic fortification in Besançon, France, built between 1791 and 1870. Perched on a secondary peak of Mont de Brégille, it was strategically important, especially after the siege of Besançon in 1674. The fort was designed to support the larger Fort de Brégille and defend the eastern approaches to the city. Initially built in the late 18th century, the fort gained prominence during the French Campaign of 1814. General Marulaz recognized the need for a robust defense and oversaw the construction of a true fort. Beauregard is notable as one of the first polygonal fortresses in France. Its design included a central traverse surrounded by a crenelated escarp wall and a ditch with an earthen counterscarp. A two-story barracks overlooked the city and the Doubs River. Like many of Besançon's forts, Beauregard eventually became obsolete. After years of neglect, the city of Besançon, the site's owner, renovated the fort into a public square in the 2010s. Today, visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy panoramic views of the old city, and appreciate a space that blends history with modern conviviality.
