Discover more about Île aux Cygnes

Île aux Cygnes (Isle of Swans) is a narrow, artificial island in the Seine River, constructed in 1827 to protect the Pont de Grenelle. Measuring 850 meters long and only 11 meters at its widest, it provides a peaceful, tree-lined promenade away from the city's hustle. The island's name comes from the swans that once frequented the area. Today, the Allée des Cygnes, a shaded walkway, runs the length of the island, offering stunning views of the Eiffel Tower. The island is crossed by three bridges: Pont de Grenelle, Pont Rouelle, and Pont de Bir-Hakeim. A notable feature is the quarter-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty, gifted to France by the American Committee of Paris in 1889. It faces west, towards its larger sister in New York City. The statue stands 11.50 meters tall and was originally facing the Eiffel Tower, but its position was changed in 1937. In 1900, Île aux Cygnes hosted the fishing events of the Olympic Games. For the International Exposition in 1937, it was transformed into the “Center des Colonies,” showcasing workshops and crafts from French colonies. Today, the island is a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking a quiet escape, offering sports facilities like a climbing wall since 2012.
