Discover more about fontaine du Pilori

The Fontaine du Pilori, an iconic historical monument, graces the heart of La Rochelle at the intersection of Rue du Minage and Rue du Cordouan. Its history is rich, initially named 'Fontaine du Puits Lori,' drawing its name from an ancient well, contrary to the belief it's named after a 'pilori' (a public punishment post). Originally, in the 16th century, the fountain was situated at the bottom of a large, circular excavation about six meters in diameter, accessible via two horseshoe-shaped iron staircases. This design posed safety risks, especially during winter when the steps iced over. In 1711, authorities filled the dangerous excavation, and by 1722, the fountain was reconstructed to ground level by Julien Bonnichon, based on the designs of military engineer Verrier. The Fontaine du Pilori showcases a classic architectural style, featuring an octagonal structure topped with a cupola. A decorative mascaron dispenses water, and the structure is adorned with sculptures and decorative elements characteristic of the 18th century. The fountain is a reminder of La Rochelle's historical water system, part of a network supplied by gravity from sources kilometers away. It was officially recognized as a historical monument on March 17, 1925.
