Discover more about Royal Gate of La Rochelle

La Rochelle's Royal Gate, or Porte Royale, is the most ambitious architectural undertaking of the city's new fortified enclosure, with construction beginning in 1689 under the guidance of Vauban. The gate was envisioned as a triumphal arch, reflecting the power of the French monarchy and serving as a monumental entrance to the city. Pierre Bullet, who designed the Porte Saint-Martin in Paris, was commissioned for the project. Construction faced funding shortages, with the foregate completed in 1706. The Royal Gate was finally completed between 1716 and 1724 under engineer René-Jacob de Tigné. During the reign of Louis XV, the gate was used to incarcerate enemy sailors, who left testaments and images of their ships on the walls. Around 1900, the city's fortifications were decommissioned. In 1920, bypasses were created on each side of the gate to accommodate increasing car traffic. The city of La Rochelle acquired the gate in 1953. Restoration efforts began in 2015 by the Association of Friends of La Rochelle. Today, the Royal Gate stands as a historical monument, inviting visitors to explore its intricate stonework and imagine the bustling activity that once filled this area.
