Discover more about Saint Saviour Church of La Rochelle

Saint Saviour Church, or Église Saint-Sauveur, is a historical and architectural gem in the heart of La Rochelle. The church's story began in the 12th century when monks from the Île d'Aix constructed the original Romanesque church. In 1419, a fire ravaged the structure, necessitating its rebuilding in the Gothic style. This second iteration was completed by 1492, incorporating a bell tower built upon the original foundations. During the late 16th century, religious tensions escalated, and anti-Catholic forces pillaged La Rochelle's churches. Fearing a siege, they used the churches' stones to build fortifications, leaving only the bell tower of Saint Saviour standing for use as a watchtower. After Louis XIII recaptured the city, Catholicism was reinstated, and the church was rebuilt between 1652 and 1679. However, fate struck again in 1705 when another fire destroyed the church, save for its entrance facade. The current church, the fourth on the site, dates back to 1718 and showcases a Louis XIII architectural style. Inside, visitors can admire the harmonious blend of Gothic and Baroque elements, remnants of its long history. The interior features three naves, a striking transept, and a high altar. Stained glass windows cast colorful light across the aisles, illuminating ship models and nautical memorials that pay homage to La Rochelle's maritime past. The church often hosts concerts and community events, taking advantage of its excellent acoustics. A visit to Saint Saviour offers a glimpse into La Rochelle's soul, a place where history, art, and faith converge.
