Discover more about Monument aux Soldats et Marins

The Monument aux Soldats et Marins stands as a solemn tribute to the soldiers and sailors of the Charente-Inférieure (present-day Charente-Maritime) who lost their lives during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Situated on the Quai Valin, between the two basins of the old port of La Rochelle, the monument serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation. The monument's history began in February 1896 when families requested a tribute to honor those who died during the war. The mayor of La Rochelle contacted the local committee of the Souvenir Français, an association dedicated to preserving the memory of those who died for France, to take charge of the project. The final design by Pierre Laurent was approved three years later, and the monument was inaugurated on August 16, 1913, in a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Colonies, Jean Morel. The monument itself features a tall base with inscriptions, an obelisk, and a sculpture of three soldiers/sailors. At the top of the obelisk is a rooster, a symbol of France. The monument also bears the signature of the sculptor, Pierre Laurent. In early 2017, the monument was moved a short distance to allow visitors to admire it more easily. Patriotic ceremonies are regularly held here.
