Discover more about Casco histórico de La Rochelle

The Casco Histórico de La Rochelle, the city's historic district, invites visitors to step back in time while embracing the lively ambiance of a modern coastal city. This mesmerizing area features beautifully preserved medieval architecture, showcasing stunning examples of 17th-century buildings and charming cobblestone streets. At the heart of the city lies the iconic Vieux Port (Old Port), where picturesque boats bob gently in the water and vibrant cafes line the waterfront. The impressive Tour de la Chaîne and Tour Saint-Nicolas, ancient towers that once guarded the harbor, serve as remarkable reminders of La Rochelle's maritime past. The district's arcaded streets, a hallmark of La Rochelle, once allowed merchants to display their wares while sheltered from the elements. Today, these arcades provide shaded sidewalks for cafes, boutiques, and restaurants. Don't miss the Grosse Horloge, marking the entrance to the old district, and the half-timbered houses and shipowners' mansions that whisper stories of La Rochelle's rich history. La Rochelle's history is deeply intertwined with the sea, having grown from a fishing village to a significant port for wine and salt trade. Its independent spirit led it to embrace Protestantism, facing destruction during the Great Siege of 1627-1628. The city later established trade links with New France (Canada) and the West Indies, becoming a hub for merchants and maritime activity.
