Discover more about Place des petits bancs

Place des Petits Bancs is a historical square nestled in the heart of La Rochelle, France. Its name, translating to 'Square of the Small Benches,' harkens back to the Middle Ages when bankers conducted their transactions on small wooden tables, or 'bancs', within small lodges surrounding the square. This practice is even said to be the origin of the word 'bank'. For many years, a fountain graced the center of the square. However, in 1905, it was replaced by a bronze bust of Eugène Fromentin, a painter and writer from La Rochelle who specialized in Orientalist themes. The bust is accompanied by a striking equestrian statue of a fantasia rider, referencing the North African equestrian tradition. The square is framed by notable architecture, including a beautiful 16th-century Renaissance building on its southeast side, showcasing La Rochelle's rich architectural heritage. Today, Place des Petits Bancs provides a tranquil pause from the bustling city center, inviting visitors to appreciate its unique atmosphere where history and art converge.
