Discover more about Château de Quéribus

Château de Quéribus, a ruined castle in the commune of Cucugnan, Aude département, stands as a sentinel overlooking the landscape. Rising 728 meters high on a rocky ridge, this 'Citadel of Vertigo' offers stunning 360° views from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean. First mentioned in 1020, Quéribus became a key defense point and refuge for Cathars in the 12th and 13th centuries. Chabert de Barbaira, a knight and supporter of the Cathars, held the castle against the French king until 1255, making it the last Cathar stronghold to fall. After its capture, it was integrated into the French border defense system against Aragon. Visitors can explore the castle's three defensive walls, the keep, main hall, and water cisterns. The polygonal donjon is famous for its Gothic hall, featuring a vaulted ceiling supported by a central pillar. From the terrace, the views of the Corbières, Roussillon plain, and the Pyrenees are breathtaking. The entrance fee includes a visit to the Achille Mir Theatre in Cucugnan, where a multilingual slide show recounts the legend of the Curé of Cucugnan.
