Discover more about Portes Castle

Château de Portes, a classified historical monument, stands as a sentinel overlooking the Cévennes National Park. Built in the 11th century, the castle guarded the Regordane Way, an ancient route used by pilgrims and crusaders. Its strategic location provided control over this vital passage, witnessing centuries of travelers and trade. The castle's architecture is truly unique. Often called the 'Vessel of the Cévennes,' its distinct prow-like structure, a sharp 49-degree angle, juts out, resembling a ship's bow. This unusual design, added in the 17th century by Antoine Hercule de Budos, a vice-admiral, gives the castle its distinctive appearance. Over the centuries, the Château de Portes has undergone many transformations. Originally a medieval fortress, it evolved into a more refined residence during the Renaissance. The castle's defenses were reinforced during the Hundred Years' War, and it later served as a prison during the French Revolution. In the 20th century, coal mining beneath the castle caused significant damage, leading to its abandonment and the relocation of the village. Today, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the association “Renaissance du Château de Portes”, the castle has been partially restored. Visitors can explore several floors, admire the monumental fireplaces, and discover a blend of medieval and Renaissance décor. The castle also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Cévennes valleys, Mont Lozère, and the Alès plain.
