Discover more about Sanctuary Wood Cemetery

Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, located 5 kilometers east of Ypres (Ieper) in Belgium, is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery from World War I. The cemetery is located on Canadalaan, off the Meenseweg (N8), which connects Ypres to Menen. The area earned its name in November 1914 when British troops used the woods as shelter behind the front lines. The cemetery is near the site of heavy fighting in September 1915 and the Battle of Mount Sorrel in June 1916, involving the 1st and 3rd Canadian Divisions. The battles largely obliterated three smaller cemeteries that had been established between May and August 1915. After the war, traces of one of these cemeteries were found, containing 137 graves, which became the nucleus of the present Sanctuary Wood Cemetery. Plots II-V were added between 1927 and 1932, extending the cemetery to 'Maple Avenue,' with graves brought in from surrounding battlefields and smaller cemeteries. Today, Sanctuary Wood Cemetery contains the graves and memorials of 1,989 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War. Over two-thirds of these graves are unidentified. Many graves are identified in groups but not individually. Lieutenant G.W.L. Talbot, in whose memory Talbot House at Poperinghe was established in December 1915, is buried in Plot I. The cemetery was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Visitors can also see the nearby Hill 62 (Sanctuary Wood) Canadian Memorial, located 100 meters further down Canadalaan.
