Discover more about Lorraine Kreuz

The Lorraine Kreuz is a significant monument perched on the Staufen hill overlooking Thann, France. Erected as a symbol of Alsatian resistance during World War II, it commemorates those who fought for the liberation of the region. General de Gaulle laid the foundation stone on August 1, 1948, and the monument was inaugurated on July 10, 1949. The 12-meter-high reinforced concrete structure was built in just four weeks. The location was strategically chosen to face the Rhine border, visible from the Alsace plain. In March and September 1981, the cross was damaged in two attacks. It was temporarily replaced with a wooden cross until the new Cross of Staufen was inaugurated on June 18, 1986. Today, the illuminated cross serves as a reminder of the flame of resistance, evoked in General de Gaulle's appeal on June 18, 1940. From the Lorraine Kreuz, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Alsace plain, Mulhouse, and the foothills of the Swiss Jura. The site is accessible via a family-friendly walk, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking historical significance and scenic beauty.
