Discover more about Château de Baugé

The Château de Baugé, located in the heart of Anjou, stands as a testament to medieval history and royal life. Originally built as a fortress in the 11th century, the current structure largely dates back to the 15th century when René of Anjou transformed it into a majestic residence. King René, a passionate hunter, favored the castle for its proximity to the game-filled Baugé forests. He commissioned the construction of the castle in 1454, appointing Guillaume Robin as his architect, and by 1465, the castle was complete. René also designed the gardens, planting them with various shrubs and flowers. The castle became one of René's favorite homes, where he often hosted lavish banquets and indulged in his love for hunting. Over the centuries, the château passed through many hands and families. Today, the Château de Baugé offers visitors a glimpse into the life of King René and the history of the region. The castle's interior features include the Hall of the royal banquet, the King's Chamber, and a chapel. Visitors can also explore the attic, which has been transformed into a performance hall that recounts the life of King René and the castle's history through a sound and light show. The Château de Baugé is open to the public from April to early November. A visit typically lasts around 1 to 1.5 hours.
