Château de Clefs Travel Guide

Nestled in the commune of Clefs-Val d'Anjou, the Château de Clefs, also known as Manoir de Toury, is a beautifully restored manor house that whispers tales of 16th-century France. Built in the early 1500s for Louis de Chandio, captain of the guards for François I, the château showcases architectural elements typical of the Renaissance.The building is constructed primarily of white limestone, rendering and cob. Some of its relatively small windows are adorned with old stained glass, while others feature mullions. The roofs are covered with flat gray slate tiles, contrasting with the brick-colored ridge tiles. Inside, the château boasts superb Renaissance-style fireplaces with richly sculpted mantels, displaying the coats of arms of the lords of the manor.Classified as a French historical monument in 1998, the Château de Clefs is a private residence, but it occasionally opens its doors to the public during heritage days. Though not always accessible, its exterior charm and historical significance make it a worthwhile point of interest in the Loire Valley.
