Discover more about Château d'Angers

The Château d'Angers, a striking silhouette against the Angers skyline, offers a journey through centuries of French history. Originally built in the 9th century to defend against Norman invasions, it was significantly transformed under the reign of Saint Louis (Louis IX) in the 13th century, who constructed the massive ramparts and 17 towers that define its current form. Over the centuries, it has served as a residence for the Dukes of Anjou, a royal fortress, and even a prison. Today, the château is renowned for housing the Tapestry of the Apocalypse, a UNESCO-recognized masterpiece. This immense medieval tapestry, commissioned by Louis I of Anjou in 1375, vividly illustrates the Book of Revelation and contemporary events. Its intricate details and vibrant colors offer a glimpse into the art and culture of the 14th century. A visit to the Château d'Angers includes exploring the ramparts, which provide panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. Visitors can also discover the castle's gardens, including a rose garden and a hydrangea garden, which showcase the region's horticultural heritage. The Saint-Laud chapel, built in the early 15th century, and the King René's gallery, which hosts temporary exhibitions, are also highlights of the tour. The castle is located in the center of Angers, making it easily accessible. It is open year-round, except for January 1st, May 1st, and December 25th.
