Angoulême Cathedral, or Cathédrale Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural grandeur. The site has been a place of religious significance for centuries, even before Christianity, with a primitive sanctuary dedicated to Jupiter believed to have stood there. The first Christian cathedral was constructed in the 4th century, but it was destroyed in 508. Another cathedral was consecrated in 566, but it was later burned down by the Vikings/Normans. The current cathedral owes its existence to Bishop Girard II, who initiated its construction around 1110. The cathedral was consecrated in 1128. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone numerous modifications and restorations, especially in the 19th century under the guidance of architect Paul Abadie. These restorations included the reconstruction of the octagonal dome, the addition of new windows, and the completion of the facade's upper levels. The facade is decorated with more than 70 sculptures, organized into themes of the Ascension and the Last Judgement. The interior of the nave is covered with three domes, a transept of great length with lofty towers, and an apsidal choir with four chevet chapels. The semicircular choir is flanked by small apses and covered by a half dome.
