The Basilique Saint-Eutrope de Saintes, a major Catholic sanctuary in Saintes, stands as a testament to Romanesque art and the region's rich history. Founded in 1081 and consecrated in 1096, the basilica honors Saint Eutrope, the first bishop and evangelizer of the region, whose tomb lies within the crypt. For centuries, it has been a significant stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.The basilica is renowned for its two superimposed choirs and its crypt, which is one of the largest Romanesque crypts in Europe. The crypt stretches 35 meters in length with a 5-meter high vaulted ceiling. Within the crypt, 53 intricately adorned capitals showcase plant-based compositions, transporting visitors back to the 11th century.
