Discover more about Château de Bayers

Château de Bayers, located in the commune of Aunac-sur-Charente, is a testament to French history and architectural resilience. The castle's story began as a fortified structure in the 12th century, strategically positioned to monitor a ford across the Charente River. Partially destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, it was later transformed in the 15th century by Guillaume de La Rochefoucauld into a more habitable residence. Throughout the centuries, the château has witnessed periods of glory and neglect. During the French Wars of Religion, it faced attacks, leaving visible marks of musket fire. In the 17th century, a French garden was added, enhancing its appeal as a pleasure residence. However, by the late 18th century, the last La Rochefoucauld owner sold the deteriorating château. It fell into ruin during the 19th and early 20th centuries due to a lack of maintenance. In 1976, new owners purchased the Château de Bayers with the intention of restoring it to its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the restored castle, including the ground floor of the tower and main building, the moats, the soldiers' tower, the prison, and the remains of the Romanesque dungeon. The castle also features a terrace offering panoramic views of the Charente valley. The blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture, coupled with its rich history, makes Château de Bayers a worthwhile destination.
