Discover more about Donjon de Niort

The Donjon de Niort, also known as the Château de Niort, stands as a formidable testament to medieval architecture in the town of Niort. Built by Henry II Plantagenet and completed by Richard the Lionheart, the castle was part of a vast quadrilateral fortress used to defend the lands of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Originally a military fortress, the Donjon later served as a residence for the captain of the guards and governors until the 17th century. It also housed a barracks, stores, and dungeons. The north tower nearly collapsed in 1749, and there was a proposal to demolish the Donjon, but fortunately, it was restored in 1751. From the 18th century, it became a prison, housing English sailors who left inscriptions on the walls, which are still visible today. Today, the Donjon serves as a museum, offering visitors a journey through history. The museum features archaeological exhibits from the Bronze Age, Gallo-Roman period, and Middle Ages. The first floor is dedicated to chamois leather and glove making, while the second floor showcases a reconstructed Poitevin interior from 1830 and a collection of costumes, headgear, and jewelry. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the town and the Sèvre Niortaise from the roof.
