Motte de la Garde: A Prehistoric Burial Mound

Motte de la Garde is a significant archaeological site located in the commune of Luxé, in the Charente department of France. It is classified as a dolmen, a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb, set within a large tumulus or burial mound. The site dates back to the Neolithic period, specifically the Middle and Final Neolithic eras (Artenacian). The tumulus itself is quite substantial, measuring approximately 50 meters in length and 27 meters in width, with a height of about 4 meters. The dolmen is positioned off-center within the tumulus, suggesting it may have been constructed after the mound itself. The dolmen's chamber opens to the east and measures 3.25 meters long by 2.40 meters wide, with a height of 2 meters. The capstone is about 1.50 meters thick and rests on five orthostates (upright stones) that have been reshaped. Archaeological excavations at Motte de la Garde have revealed a wealth of artifacts, including human remains, pottery shards, and various lithic materials. The human bones discovered suggest the burial of at least fifteen individuals. Other finds include axes made of sandstone and fibrolite, polished flint blades, arrowheads, and scrapers. Additionally, small bone tools like awls and needle fragments, as well as decorative items such as quartz beads, bronze beads, and green stone pendants, have been unearthed. Visiting Motte de la Garde offers a unique opportunity to connect with the distant past and explore the tangible remains of Neolithic culture in the Charente region. While the site may require some exploration to locate within the wooded area, the impressive size of the tumulus and the presence of the dolmen chamber make it a rewarding destination for history enthusiasts and those interested in prehistoric monuments.
